After the pregnancy of the female is confirmed, the gynec prescribes certain tests for the mother to be of which Ultra sound scanning is the most important one. Before going deep into other topics first of all let us know in detail as to what is an USG or Ultra Sound Scanning and the purpose of prescribing a scan for a pregnant female.
An ultrasound scan, also referred to as a sonogram, diagnostic sonography, and ultrasonography, is a device that uses high frequency sound waves to create live images of some internal part of the body, such as the stomach, liver, heart, tendons, muscles, joints and blood vessels. It is a common painless test that uses sound waves and not radiation and it is considered to be very safe. This technology is similar to that used by sonar and radar, which helps the military force to detect planes and ships.

Uses of Ultra Sound Scanning:
Ultrasound imaging has many uses in medicine, from confirming a pregnancy to diagnosing certain conditions and guiding doctors through precise medical procedures. It can help doctors during procedures such as needle biopsies, which require the doctor to remove tissue from a very precise area inside the body for testing in a lab. It also helps in determining the approximate date of delivery of the mom.
Pregnancy Ultra Sound Scanning:
This is also referred to as“Obstetric ultrasonography” which is used to create real time images of the developing embryo or fetus in its mother’s womb (uterus). This procedure is part of a prenatal care in many countries as a variety of information can be found out like the health of the mother, the growing fetus, the timing and progressing of pregnancy etc. The first scan can be very exciting for the mothers to be since it gives the first glimpse of the baby.

The scan sends high frequency sound waves through the tummy into the uterus. These waves bounce off as the baby echoes and these echoes are then turned into images on a screen that shows the position of the baby and its respective movements. Hard tissues such as the bone reflect the most sound waves and make the biggest echoes. The images appear white in color on the monitor of the sonographic equipment. Soft tissues appear grey in color and speckled. Fluids such as the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby appear black because the sound waves here do not have any echoes.
The person who performs the Ultra sound scan is called a “sonographer” who will take a look at these different shades of the echoes and interpret the images. The ultrasound report will have a printout of the baby’s images. However, it is important to remember that the main purpose of the scan is to check that the baby is growing and developing normally or there is some problem in the pregnancy.

It is the contrast between these different shades of white, grey and black that allows the doctor or the sonographer to interpret the images. Many a times in India parents are excited to know about the gender of the baby and given the female infanticide rate the Government of India has banned sex determination of the fetus and any scanning center doing the same shall be cancelled of the license and the doctor doing such a tests can be jailed.
